BNP on Sunday issued a show-cause notice to Fazlur Rahman, the party chairperson's adviser, over controversial remarks he made in recent talk shows and seminars.
A senior party source confirmed the development.
According to the notice, Fazlur has been making "derogatory and misleading" statements about the July Uprising, which the party says are contrary to BNP's ideals and disrespectful to the memory of those who sacrificed their lives.
The controversy intensified after Fazlur appeared on a private television talk show, where he claimed that the Islamist group Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir played the most significant role in the August 5 movement.
His comments sparked sharp criticism both inside and outside the party.
The letter further stated that BNP considers his remarks a "deliberate attempt to undermine the party's reputation" and accused him of hurting people's religious sentiments.
It noted that during the July Uprising, over 1,500 people, including more than 450 BNP activists, were killed, while more than 30,000 were injured.
The party accused Fazlur of repeatedly insulting the heroic role of students and the public in restoring democracy.
Fazlur has been asked to explain within 24 hours why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.
He must submit a written reply to the BNP's central office in Naya Paltan.
