The Consulate General of Bangladesh in New York has sent letters to the local police of New York, the mayor, and the US Department of State, urging action over attempted disruptions during a view-exchange programme at the Bangladesh consulate on Sunday, where Adviser Mahfuj Alam was the chief guest.
Videos showed a mob attacking the consulate and threatening Adviser Mahfuj. Videos of the incident went viral.
In a press release on Monday, the Bangladesh Consulate said the leaders and activists of the US Awami League and its affiliated organisations began gathering in front of the consulate from 5pm with the apparent intent of creating disruptions at the event and attacking the chief guest.
They chanted slogans against the Bangladesh government and used offensive and vulgar language.
At one point, they chased the invited guests, obstructing their participation.
They resorted to various other disruptive tactics, including throwing eggs at the guests, the consulate alleged.
They struck the glass door of an adjacent office to the consulate entrance (within the same building), causing it to crack.
Police intervened to stop this destructive behaviour and detained several of the miscreants. Photos and video footage of the incident have been submitted to the police as evidence, the release added.
It further stated that the cronies of the fallen fascist regime surrounded the consulate carrying Awami League flags and remained there until midnight.
However, as the police were present throughout the whole time, the chief guest arrived at the venue on time using the designated entry path without any disruption.
Following a lively discussion, interaction with guests, and dinner, the chief guest departed safely in his designated vehicle without any untoward incident.
The press release clarified that at no point during his arrival or departure did the chief guest have any direct or indirect contact with the miscreants.
