The Rajshahi University unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on Sunday placed a five-point demand for ensuring a fair election to the university's central students union.
Chhatra Dal leaders and activists marched on campus and submitted a memorandum to Vice Chancellor Saleh Hasan Naqib.
Their demands are:
1. Including 1st year students and foreign students in the voter list;
2. Setting up polling centres in academic buildings instead of halls;
3. Preparing an updated voter list with photographs;
4. Ensuring the coexistence of all active student organisations in the halls;
5. Holding a fair, democratic, and participatory election without discrimination.
Addressing a rally, JCD President Sultan Ahmed Rahi said a corrupt group that once sold itself to Pakistan is busy spreading lies about Chhatra Dal and scheming to abolish the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU).
"Students are counting the days to see the Chhatra Dal announce its panel, and they are ready to vote for us. Now the pro-Pakistan [RU] administration is plotting to keep us away from RUCSU. Their conspiracy will be uprooted," Rahi added.
RU Chhatra Dal Organisational Secretary Mahmudul Mithu said more than 4,500 students from the 2024-25 session are now studying at RU.
"They played an important role in the July movement. That is why we are demanding their voting rights."
Contacted, Vice Chancellor Prof Naqib said, "We have received their demands and will discuss them. The election-related issues will be handled by the Election Commission."
