People in Teknaf's Whykong union in Cox's Bazar heard intense gunfire from the Myanmar side of the border from Friday night till Saturday morning.
They said the firing began around 11:00pm on Friday, adding that the clashes may have been between the Arakan Army, the rebel group in Rakhine State, and armed Rohingya groups.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is on high alert to prevent further influx of Rohingya refugees from Myanmar.
Sirajul Mostafa, a member of the Whykong Union Parishad, told Stream on Saturday, "Heavy gunfire has been heard intermittently from the Kumirkhali, Shilkhali, and Saidong areas on the other side of the border since last night [Friday] until morning [Saturday].
He informed that locals from the shrimp farms near the border moved to a safe distance when the shooting began.
On the condition of anonymity, a community leader (Majhi) at a Teknaf Rohingya camp said, "Recently, the Arakan Army in Rakhine has intensified torturing Rohingyas. So the Rohingya living there have taken positions near the border to save their lives."
Local and Rohingya camp sources informed that thousands of Rohingya refugees are waiting on the other side of the border to come to Bangladesh. Meanwhile, the BGB has already announced that it will continue to intensify activities in the border area to prevent possible Rohingya infiltration.
The BGB said it had obstructed 62 Rohingyas from crossing the border on Friday.
Lt Col Ashiqur Rahman, commander of the BGB's Teknaf-2 Battalion, said, "Some people are trying to intrude from across the border. The BGB is on alert to prevent anyone from entering again. In addition to increasing the number of BGB personnel at potential points of entry, patrols have also been intensified."
Earlier, the residents of the bordering Ghumdhum union of Naikhongchari upazila, near Ukhiya, heard gunfire coming from the other side of the border on the nights of 10th and 19th August.
