Islamic speaker Harun Izhar on Monday said he had no discussions about the construction of a mosque on Chandranath Hill, a pilgrimage site of the people of the Sanatan religion.
Harun wrote on Facebook that several young men met him two days ago, and said a mosque was needed for tourists at a suitable place, and they were interested in financing it.
"They expressed no intention to build a mosque in the Sitakunda's Chandranath temple area," he wrote.
Two days ago, a man named M M Saiful Islam wrote on Facebook that Mufti Harun Izhar had agreed to help him and several others build a mosque on top of the Chandranath hill.
On the now deactivated Facebook profile, he wrote that he recently visited the hill and did not find a mosque to say his prayers.
He also posted a photo of himself shaking hands with Harun.
The post soon went viral, prompting widespread criticism as Chandranath Hill is recognised as a holy site by the people of the Sanatan religion.
Meanwhile, the Sitakunda administration on Sunday said in a statement that no permission had been granted for the construction of any mosque.
Contacted, Harun said he had constantly been receiving phone calls from journalists.
He urged people not to spread "false" information that could incite religious tension.
Harun also sent Stream a link to his Facebook post.
