The Sitakunda administration on Sunday stated in a press release that no permission has been granted for the construction of a mosque on Chandranath Hill.
"We have come across a Facebook post regarding an initiative to construct a mosque on Chandranath Hill in Sitakunda. As soon as the post was noticed yesterday, instructions were given to the law enforcement agencies and intelligence agencies to closely monitor the matter and take necessary actions," reads a statement from Upazila Nirbahi Officer Fakhrul Islam.
"The [Facebook] post mentions that there will be communication with the administration regarding this matter today. However, no one has contacted the administration about this issue so far."
It further mentions, "The various temples located on Chandranath Hill in Sitakunda are considered a sacred pilgrimage site for followers of the Sanatan Dharma in the subcontinent. Devotees from various parts of the world regularly visit the hill and temples for worship and rituals.
"Sitakunda Upazila is a shining example of communal harmony, where people of all religions have peacefully coexisted for a long time. The people of Sitakunda hold the beliefs, values, feelings, and emotions of Sanatan Dharma followers in deep respect and reverence. Therefore, the people of Sitakunda will never support any activity that could disturb communal harmony."
The administration has inspected the Chandranath Temple area and found no evidence of any efforts to build a mosque there. The administration assures all Sanatan Dharma followers that no permission has been granted for the construction of a mosque in the Chandranath Temple area.
"Any attempt to spread rumours, propaganda, or misinformation on social media that may disrupt the communal harmony and peaceful environment of Sitakunda will be dealt with according to the law.
"We urge everyone to maintain peace and harmony in our society. Differences in religion and caste should not be the cause of division, but rather strengthen the bonds of love and empathy. Let us come together to set a beautiful example of unity and brotherhood," the press release concludes.
