UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are in talks over a potential migrant swap agreement that could see 50 migrants a week sent back to France, reports the BBC.
While the deal has not yet been confirmed, BBC correspondent Henry Zeffman reports that around 50 migrants could be moved each way during the initial phase. This would represent only a small portion of the total number of migrants who typically make the dangerous Channel crossing each week.
According to reports, the proposed pilot scheme would follow a "one in, one out" approach. Under this arrangement, for every migrant returned to France after crossing the Channel in a small boat, an asylum seeker — possibly one with family ties to Britain—would be transferred from France to the UK.
Further details and confirmation of the plan are expected following the ongoing discussions at Downing Street.
