Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Arifuzzaman on Saturday was detained by India's Border Security Force's (BSF) 143rd Battalion while attempting to illegaly cross into the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India.
He is a named accused in the murder case of Abu Sayed in Rangpur.
After preliminary interrogation, he was handed over to the local police. Authorities recovered multiple identity documents and official papers from him.
Cases have been filed against Arifuzzaman under Section 14(a) of the Foreigners Act and Section 12 of the Indian Passport Act.
On Sunday, he was presented before the Basirhat Subdivisional Court under tight security, where the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate ordered 14 days of judicial custody.
Arifuzzaman (48) is a resident of Shahipara in Nilphamari district.
He was serving as an ASP in APBn-2 in Muktagacha, Mymensingh. However, he had gone on the run and was temporarily suspended after being absent from his post without permission since 14 October last year.
On 16 July last year, Abu Sayed was killed in police firing during protests at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur.
After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on 5 August last year, Arifuzzaman went into hiding.
Although he was later transferred to Mymensingh, he remained underground for months before finally being caught while attempting to escape to India.
Satkhira's Additional Superintendent of Police, Mukit Khan, said, "Arifuzzaman was last seen on duty in Muktagacha until 13 October. He had been missing since then and was temporarily suspended."
