The United States has praised Bangladesh for its continued role in sheltering displaced Rohingya, reaffirming Washington's support for communities affected by the crisis in Burma.
In a press statement issued by the US Department of State on Sunday, the US acknowledged Bangladesh's effort in hosting hundreds of thousands of Rohingya who fled violence and persecution in Burma's Rakhine State.
"The United States expresses its support for the people of Burma, including Rohingya and other ethnic groups who have been subjected to violence and displacement. We commend the Government of Bangladesh for continuing to provide shelter to displaced Rohingya, as well as to other countries in the region for hosting refugees from Burma," the statement reads.
According to a report by UNHCR, Bangladesh hosts close to one million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, making it one of the largest protracted refugee situations in the world.
Following the influx in 2017, the humanitarian community closely collaborated with the Government of Bangladesh to address the humanitarian needs resulting from large-scale displacement. Rohingya refugees are hosted in 33 highly congested camps in Cox's Bazar District.
