Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Thursday arrested an Indian national for attempting to traffic two Bangladeshi women and a child to India through the Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah district.
According to a press release issued by the BGB, the arrested individual has been identified as Shankar Adhikari, 39, son of Nukul Adhikari from Purba Huda village under Bagda Police Station in North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, India.
A patrol team of the BGB Maheshpur Battalion detained Shankar Adhikari around 5:30 pm on Thursday from the Kanchanpur Bridge area, located one kilometre inside Bangladesh from border pillar 60/33-R.
During preliminary interrogation, Shankar confessed to entering Bangladesh three months ago through the Benapole border, allegedly to visit his ancestral uncle in Barakhola village under Rajoir Police Station in Madaripur district.
He also claimed to have married a Bangladeshi girl named Joybala, aged only 13, and later took her to India.
He reportedly re-entered Bangladesh on April 17, 2025, via Haridaspur in India and again crossed into the country through Benapole. This time, he brought Joybala, her neighbor Yuthika Halder, 29, and Yuthika's 10-year-old son, Badhan Baida, to the Baghadanga border area of Maheshpur upazila under the pretext of a leisure trip.
However, Shankar later admitted he had made a Taka 47,000 deal with a local Bangladeshi broker named Anwar to traffic the two women and the child to India.
At the time of arrest, BGB personnel recovered Taka 50,110 in Bangladeshi currency, 850 Indian Rupees, and seven Omani Rials from Shankar's possession.
The BGB has stated that procedures are underway to hand over the arrested trafficker to Maheshpur Police Station, while the rescued women and the child will be transferred to the Justice and Care shelter in Jashore for safety and rehabilitation.
