Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, who is currently being treated in the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, sustained two injuries and a haemorrhage when law enforcers and security force officials swooped on a protest by his party.
Speaking to Stream, Shakil Uzzaman, higher council member and office coordinator of the party, said Nur sustained three injuries: a nasal fracture, an injury to the eye and a haemorrhage.
Earlier, on Friday night, he was transferred from the emergency department of the hospital to the ICU, Shakil told Stream.
"Nur has since regained consciousness, but is still in a critical condition. The head injury persists and has not been overcome yet," said Shakil.
"A board has been formed of 5-6 doctors and specialists. He was provided oxygen throughout the night as he was unable to breathe on his own. His wife, party doctor Sajjad and other leaders and activists of the party stayed in the hospital throughout the night.
"If the head injury was a bit more severe, a very unfortunate thing could have happened, the doctor said," said Shakil, stressing the severity of Nur's condition.
