Mafruhi Sattar, an election commissioner of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) Election Commission, has resigned, alleging that he faced mounting pressure after raising concerns about irregularities and flaws in the electoral process.
Disclosing the matter to the journalists around 8:40pm on Friday, he said that several rumours and misinformation were being spread while the vote counting was still underway. "I came here to respond to all the questions. I have never claimed credit for the July mass uprising nor bowed down to anyone. This sudden decision is not something out of greed or to put anyone in trouble," he added.
He further mentioned that since Thursday (11 September), numerous information had been circulating across various platforms. "I have raised many opinions, but those were ignored. The election was held, yet the results are not being published. The entire process has come under question.
"I went for prayer, and when I returned, I found that the vote counting had already started. I demanded that the counting process be suspended. I witnessed several irregularities and flaws. Even though other members of the election commission agreed on some issues, they expressed their inability to accept my concerns. Therefore, I verbally informed the vice-chancellor of my decision to step down. I have decided to resign from my responsibilities."
Earlier in the day, Mafruhi had publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with the election process.
Following the publication of this news by Dhaka Stream and Bangla Stream, the university administration called for an emergency meeting around 4:00pm, however, the meeting ended around 6:30pm without a resolution.
