General Secretary of Amar Bangladesh Party (ABP) Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad on Friday said 78% vote casting in the DUCSU elections proves that a fair and inclusive national election is possible without the Awami League and the Jatiya Party.
"The ten votes received by Sadiq, the VP candidate from the Shibir-backed panel in Jagannath Hall, prove that Shibir did not win with the support of Awami League. Rather, it was Chattra Dal, and the left wings got more votes there. Therefore, this election cannot be framed as a victory for Islamists or fundamentalists," he said at a press conference organised at the Barishal District Press Club.
"In the DUCSU elections, many did not like various panels and candidates, and so those votes accumulated in the Shibir-backed panel. For this reason, in selecting candidates, students did not consider ideology, but rather looked at who would not destabilise the campus."
He added that the DUCSU election should serve as a lesson for the national election.
In response to a question from journalists about the national election, Fuad said that the national election will take place in February, and he does not see any reason for it not to happen.
At the same time, he also expressed concern, saying that clashes among major parties centring the election could increase further. Therefore, he called on the administration to take measures in this regard.
Barishal District and Metropolitan Member Secretary G.M. Rabbi, Joint Convener Sujon Talukdar, Joint Member Secretary Tanvir Ahmed, Joint Member Secretary Raihanuddin, Central Assistant Publicity Secretary Ripon Mahmud, Member Nazmul Khan, Shovon, along with local leaders and journalists were also present there.
