The Israeli army has said it has carried out an assassination attempt on top Hamas leaders in Qatar's capital, Doha, where multiple explosions have been heard, Al Jazeera reports.
A Hamas source said the attack happened as a negotiating team was discussing a Gaza ceasefire proposal put forward by the United States.
Al-Hindi confirmed to Al Jazeera that the attempt to kill al-Hayya and other Hamas leaders who were meeting to discuss Trump's ceasefire proposal had failed, but killed al-Hayya's son, Hammam, and one of his top aides.
The head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) has condemned the "heinous" Israeli attack on the Qatari capital, saying it "constitutes a serious violation of international law and the sovereignty of the State of Qatar".
The office of the Israeli prime minister has suggested that Israel acted alone in its attack on Doha.
"Today's action against the top terrorist chieftains of Hamas was a wholly independent Israeli operation," Netanyahu's office said in a social media post.
