A section of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Banani was gridlocked for more than seven hours on Sunday as drivers of CNG-run auto-rickshaws blocked the road in front of the BRTA office.
The protesting drivers were from outside Dhaka and were demanding that they be allowed to operate their vehicles inside the city, said Sergeant Anisur Rahman of Banani Police Station in a Facebook post.
The gridlock finally eased around 6:00pm, after army and police assured them of a decision on their demand in two days, said a Dhaka Stream reporter from the spot.
Army arrived at the scene around 5:00pm.
Around 10:30 am, the drivers gathered in front of the BRTA office to demonstrate. By 12:30pm, traffic on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway came to a standstill on both sides.
The protestors said they have been demonstrating to demand designated operating routes for CNG-run auto-rickshaws.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Mohakhali Zone Assistant Commissioner Delwar said, "The CNG drivers staged protests just a few days ago, and began demonstrating again this morning."
