The US does not support any particular party in Bangladesh, but meets with them to understand their platforms and goals, Charge d'Affaires of the US Embassy in Dhaka Tracey Ann Jacobson said on Monday.
After a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at his office in the capital's Agargaon, Jacobson said, "I'm here with some of my colleagues to listen and to learn and to understand. Since there are so many rumours and conspiracy theories out there, I want to be very clear what the US government position is."
She said the US supports the interim government and the Election Commission in charting a pathway to free and fair elections early next year.
"We hope those elections will happen in an atmosphere of peace and security, and we hope they will lead to a successful democratic government that will represent the aspirations and dreams of the Bangladeshi people."
"We do not as the US embassy or the US government support any particular party but we do meet with the political parties to understand their platforms and their goals."
The US envoy also said they did not support any particular outcome.
"That is for the people of Bangladesh to decide and we wish you all the best success in doing it," she concluded.
