At around 8pm yesterday, a post went viral on social media showing a teenager surrounded by people and police in Wari's Hathkhola area.
The youth was allegedly attacking another person before locals chased and detained him.
Eyewitnesses told Stream that at around 8:30pm, a group of 6 to 7 people surrounded and beat 17-year-old teenager Syed Redwan Maulana.
They kept hitting Redwan on the head with a motorcycle helmet.
At one stage, the attackers picked up a brick and tried to hit him on the head similar to the recent gruesome Mitford murder. That's when the general public gathered to stop the assailants.
The traffic sergeant on duty arrived and tried to control the situation at the scene.
Among the attackers, Abdur Rahim Mahi (19) and Sabbir Hossain Ratul (19) were arrested by the police.
The rest fled.
Wari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Faisal Ahmed said, "A group of young men of similar age were fighting. They are not in gangs; both sides have identified themselves as students. The boy who suffered serious injuries has been sent to the hospital. An investigation is underway into the arrests of those arrested."
He added, "The police are investigating whether the attack was due to past enmity. It is also important for the locals to come forward and not remain silent in this incident."
Locals in the video could be heard saying the youth was affiliated with a political party. But this was not confirmed by law enforcers.
The shocking murder of Sohag, 35, a trader of used copper and aluminium wires in the Mitford area, in broad daylight last week sent shockwaves throughout the country.
The barbarity on display spurred citizens to demand swift justice. Fingers were also being pointed at political parties, which many suspected to be involved.
