As images and videos spread of the violence in Gopalganj on Tuesday, stemming from an attack on NCP's rally in the area allegedly by AL men, news also began emerging of deaths in the clashes.
The death toll, however, has become a cause of discussion and confusion, with the local police keeping mum.
The Bangla Daily Prothom Alo around 5:30pm reported that three people had died.
The paper identified the deceased as Dipto Saha, 25, and Ramzan Kazi, 18 – both locals.
Gopalganj General Hospital superintendent Jibitesh Biswas confirmed to the daily that three people were brought to the hospital dead, their bodies riddled with bullets.
Prothom Alo also spoke to the relatives of two of the deceased, but could not confirm the death of the third.
Around 7:30pm, however, Prothom Alo updated their report and identified him as one Sohel Molla from Tungipara.
Around the same time, English daily The Daily Star also reported that "at least" two people had died.
The Business Standard, on the other hand, had identified a third death by 7:00pm: Sohel Molla, 30, from Tungipara.
Meanwhile, around 7:00pm, BBC Bangla reported that four people had died in the round of violence.
It also quoted Jibitesh Biswas.
Bangla daily Samakal, meanwhile, has also kept the death toll at two as of filing of this report at 7:54pm.
As of this time, calls to Jibitesh by Dhaka Stream have gone unanswered.
