The shocking murder of Sohag, 35, a trader of used copper and aluminium wires in the Mitford area, in broad daylight sent shockwaves throughout the country.
The barbarity on display spurred citizens to demand swift justice. Fingers were also being pointed at political parties, which many suspected to be involved.
So far, police have made five arrests.
The entire incident is now a talking point, with many top leaders and officials having weighed in already.
'Regrettable, will take swift action': Home affairs advisor
Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Saturday described the murder of scrap metal trader Lal Chand Sohag in front of Mitford Hospital in the capital as brutal and very regrettable.
He said, "We've become somewhat intolerant. Even minor incidents are escalating into violent clashes. Everyone must come forward to stop this tendency.
"Those involved in similar incidents in Chandpur, Khulna, and Chattogram have already been brought to justice. We take immediate action whenever such incidents occur," said the adviser.
Can't understand why those directly involved have not been arrested yet: Jubo Dal President
Three affiliated organisations of BNP — Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal and Chhatra Dal — on Saturday raised questions and doubts over the failure to arrest the main accused and the alleged exclusion of three key suspects from the case.
"Those who were directly involved in the murder, clearly visible in CCTV and video footage, were surprisingly not made the main accused in the case. Even the individuals who carried out the fatal attack have not been arrested yet. We fail to understand the reason behind it," said Jubo Dal President Abdul Monayem Munna.
Referring to a media report, he said the daughter of the plaintiff in the case alleged that police excluded three people directly involved in the killing and instead included three innocent individuals in the case.
"More than 60 hours have passed since the incident, but despite having clear evidence of the murder, the main killers have not yet been arrested… This is a big question and a mystery," Munna said.
"The incident happened on Wednesday, but it was widely circulated on Friday. Why was there a delay of two days? Who was behind it must also be investigated. We don't know whether any quarter did it to implement an agenda, but we suspect it," Munna said.
Munna said they could not identify any of the assailants shown in the video as affiliated with Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal or Swechchhasebak Dal.
He, however, said they expelled five leaders and activists of the three organisations as they were accused in the case.
Govt committed to ensuring quick justice: Law Adviser Asif Nazrul
The government is committed to ensuring quick justice in the brutal murder that occurred near Mitford Hospital, said Law Adviser Asif Nazrul in a Facebook post on Saturday.
Asif Nazrul said five people had already been arrested in connection with the incident, which he described as "barbaric."
Police have launched an investigation with the highest priority, said the adviser, assuring that the government will take steps to ensure exemplary punishment for those involved in the killing through a speedy trial.
"The case will be transferred to the Speedy Trial Tribunal, and the trial will begin under Section 10 of the Speedy Trial Tribunal Act, 2002," he writes.
