More than 30 students of Chittagong University were injured in a violent clash with local residents near the university's Gate No. 2 early Sunday, following an alleged incident of harassment of a female student.
According to students, the confrontation began after a Philosophy Department student returned to her rented residence just before midnight. An altercation broke out with the building's guard, who allegedly refused to open the gate and verbally abused her. When the student protested, he reportedly slapped her, pushed her to the ground, and kicked her. Her roommates rushed to help, sparking further tension.
As other students gathered to protest and attempted to detain the guard, a group of locals intervened, leading to a violent clash that left at least 32 students injured.
Authorities said 12 of the injured were taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for treatment. To restore order, a platoon of Bangladesh Army personnel was deployed to the campus around 3:30am.
"I always return on time. Last night I came back before 12 am, but when I asked the guard to open the door, he refused and verbally abused me. When I protested, he slapped me and kicked me to the ground," the victim told reporters.
CU Proctor Tanvir Mohammad Haider said he immediately alerted both university security and police regarding the incident.
