Rashed Khan, the general secretary of Gono Odhikar Parishad, on Saturday demanded the ban of Jatiyo Party within 48 hours.
Speaking at a press conference and protest rally held in front of the party's central office in the capital's Bijoynagar, Rashed Khan said, "An investigation committee into yesterday's [Friday's violence in which party President Nurul Haque Nur was seriously injured] must be formed. The home adviser must resign, accepting responsibility for the attack on the leaders and activists. The Jatiyo Party must be banned within 48 hours.
"We did not create a mob to go to JaPa's office. We were preparing for a press conference in front of our own office, yet we were attacked. If justice is not served, the people will judge the government themselves," Rashed Khan stated.
"There has been no reform; only the advisers' pockets have been filled. Now, once again, there are conspiracies to create a situation like 1/11 to disrupt the elections. However, the elections must take place in February."
He further accused the government of only engaging in discussions with the BNP, Jamaat, and NCP, while sidelining other political parties.
He warned, "In the future, we will call for an all-party meeting, or else we will announce a Jamuna river blockade protest."
The rally was presided over by Mahfuzur Rahman, a senior member of the Parishad.
The speakers claimed that the attack on Nurul Haque Nur on Friday was premeditated and announced that they would continue to resist on the streets until the Jatiyo Party was banned.
After the rally, the leaders and activists raised slogans such as "Why the attack on Nur, the administration must answer", "No place for Awami League in this land", and "Break down JaPa's stronghold, destroy it".
Tires were burned in the street, and a protest procession began from the office. The procession passed through Purana Paltan, National Press Club, Matsya Bhaban, Kakrail, and returned to the office.
Other speakers included Shahid Uddin Mahmood, General Secretary of JSD, Mostafizur Rahman, Chairman of Bangladesh Labour Party, Firoz Ahmed Khan, Chairman of Progressive Democratic Party, Tarikul Islam, President of Janatar Odhikar Party, Faruk Hasan, Spokesperson of Gono Odhikar Parishad, Senior Joint Secretary Hasan Al Mamun, Joint Secretary of NCIP Zainal Abedin, and Aminul Islam, the younger brother of the Parishad's President Nurul Haque Nur.
