The interim government has formed a six-member probe commission to investigate the violence between locals in Gopalganj and law enforcement forces centring an NCP rally on 16 July, which left five people dead and many others injured.
The commission was formed in light of the recommendations made by a probe committee formed immediately after the violence in Gopalganj.
The commission's aim is to unearth the reason behind the violence, identify the people or organisations responsible for attacking the NCP rally and provide recommendations to take legal action against them, BSS reports.
The initial probe committee said the supporters of the Awami League and the banned Chhatra League launched a planned attack on NCP's July March event in Gopalganj.
Later, local administration imposed Section 144 in the area and deployed the army. As the situation continued to deteriorate, a curfew was enforced to maintain law and order.
It is necessary to investigate other relevant events, including attacks on different government establishments and the district jail and the issue of disrupting citizen security, the committee observed.
The public security division of the Home Affairs Ministry will provide secretarial assistance to the commission and bear necessary expenses.
The commission has been asked to submit its report with recommendations to the concerned ministry within three weeks.
It will be headed by former Justice Md Abu Tarique.
The other members are Additional Secretary of the Public Security Division Khandoker M Mahbubur Rahman, Additional Secretary (Senior District and Session Judge) Law and Justice Division M Saiful Islam, Commander 21 Artillery Brigade Brigadier General Shahidur Rahman Osmani, Director, Central Police Hospital, Additional Police Inspector General Sarder Nurul Amin and Professor Dr Sajjad Siddiqui, Chairman(Peace and Conflict Studies Department ), Dhaka University, said a PID handout.
