The High Court upheld the death sentences of former OC Pradip Kumar Das and inspector Liakat Ali in the murder case of Major (Retd) Sinha Rashed Khan, reports UNB.
The bench comprising Justice Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman and Justice Mohammad Sagir Hossain announced the verdict on Monday.
In addition, the court ordered each of the six other defendants in the case to pay a Tk 50,000 fine and upheld their life sentences. The life-term convicts are sub-inspector Nanda Dulal Rakshit, constables Sagar Deb and Rubel Sharma, and three police sources, Nurul Amin, Nizam Uddin, and Ayaz Uddin.
A total of seven accused, including a sub-inspector and two constables of the Armed Police Battalion and four constables of the police, were acquitted by the court in this case as well.
Earlier on January 31, 2022, Judge Mohammad Ismail of the Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Court condemned two defendants to death and six others to life in prison.
However, as the Cox's Bazar court sent verdict papers to the High Court in 2022, the state counsel did not file any plea, while two appeals were filed for the two death-row convicts.
On the night of July 31, 2020, around 9:30 pm, Major (Retd) Sinha was shot dead at the Shamlapur checkpoint on the Cox's Bazar–Teknaf Marine Drive by Inspector Liakat Ali.
On August 5, 2020, Sinha's sister, Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous, filed a case with the court. The then-in-charge of the Baharchhara police camp, inspector Liakat Ali, was the main accused in the case.
On December 13, 2020, the Rapid Action Battalion submitted a charge sheet accusing 15 individuals.
On January 31, 2022, Judge Mohammad Ismail of the Cox's Bazar District and Sessions Judge Court delivered the verdict.
In the judgment, Pradip Kumar and Liakat Ali were sentenced to death. And the other six accused, Sub-inspector Nanda Dulal Rakshit, Constable Rubel Sharma, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sagar Deb, and Constables Nurul Amin, Nezam Uddin, and Mohammad Ayaz Uddin, were handed life imprisonment, while the remaining seven accused were acquitted.
