The country's top telecom operators, Grameenphone and Robi, on Monday kicked off their launch of 5G services, with limited coverage – the first time the next-generation connectivity is made accessible to customers.
While Grameenphone said it started 5G services in all divisional cities/headquarters in Bangladesh, Robi has rolled out its services in a small number of areas across Dhaka, Sylhet and Chattogram.
Where
According to Robi's press release, these include "MBA Building, Dhaka University, Moghbazar Chourasta and Fakirapool, Paltan in Dhaka, WASA Mor, Khulshi, Katalganj R/A at Panchlaish in Chattogram, and Shagordeghir Par in Sylhet".
The press release from Grameenphone said it launched 5G services in all divisional cities.
Ankit Sureka, GP's head of communication, said, "In Dhaka, 5G connection has been rolled out in four areas initially – Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and Bashundhara. We have just launched and gradually we are going to expand the coverage".
He moreover noted that the pace of expansion will be informed by the number of users of devices that support 5G, which is no more than 5-7%.
Like Dhaka, the service is only accessible in a few areas of metropolitan cities of other divisions, Ankit said.
Meanwhile, Robi said in its press release, "5G network rollout will soon be expanded to widen the coverage area".
How
The service will only be available to customers who own devices that support the 5G network.
In supported devices, 4G sims will be sufficient for the migration given that you are in an area where the service is available.
If these conditions are met, go to your phone's settings, navigate to mobile networks, and select 5G as the preferred network. The exact specifics may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. You may also want to restart your phone for the changes to take effect.
