Several videos recently went viral on social media, alleging that BNP offices in Dhaka, Cumilla, Jashore and Jhenaidah were attacked and torched by National Citizen Party (NCP) and Jamaat-Shibir men on Saturday.
However, fact-checking platform dismislab verified five of the videos and determined they were old and erroneously associated with supposed protests following the recent murder of scrap collector Sohag in front of Dhaka's Mitford Hospital.
Video of Cumilla BNP office fire from May
More than a few videos went viral on social media alleging that NCP and Jamaat-Shibir workers torched a BNP office in Cumilla. But fact-checking shows that the incident actually occurred on May 17, 2025.
That day, leaders and activists of BNP, who were not included in the announced committee, brought out a procession from the Kandirpar area of Cumilla city. They also torched the abandoned BNP office of its south district and metropolitan unit located on Victoria College Road.
Footage from the same video was also included in a report published by Somoy TV on May 18, 2025. The daily Prothom Alo reported the incident in detail as well.
This very footage is now doing the rounds again with a fake narrative that ordinary people set fire to BNP's central office in Dhaka centring the killing of scrap trader Sohag in front of Mitford hospital.
Viral video from Jhenaidah linked to July Uprising
Another video was shared on social media, with the caption alleging that NCP and Jamaat-Shibir activists vandalised and torched a BNP office in Kaliganj, Jhenaidah.
Similar to the previous video, dismislab revealed that the incident was not recent.
Reporters from Bangla dailies Kaler Kantho and Kalbela in Jhenaidah also confirmed to dismislab that the footage was not new.
Aritra Kundu, Kaler Kantho's correspondent in Jhenaidah, said he saw the video and went to the location but found no evidence of vandalism or arson.
Later, after speaking to local BNP leaders and police, he came to know that the video was recorded on August 4, 2024, and was an attack by a pro-Awami League group when students were leading demonstrations.
Aritra Kundu recently shared a photo of the BNP office with dismislab, showing no new signs of damage. Kalbela Jhenaidah Bureau Chief Mahmud Hasan Tipu also verified the development.
According to the media, on August 4, 2024, Awami League activists vandalised and torched the BNP office located on Thana Road in Kaliganj town amid the mass uprising. A case was filed subsequently at the local police station, charging 94 Awami League men in this regard.
Not a recent incident in Jashore, but one in Lalmonirhat 2 yrs ago
Another video was posted on social media with the caption that the BNP office in Jashore was set ablaze in front of hundreds of people. However, dismislab found that the video was not from Jashore. It was actually captured during an attack on a BNP leader's office in Lalmonirhat in October, 2023.
Earlier, the original video was uploaded to the YouTube account of a local newspaper of Lalmonirhat named Lalmoni Post.
Dismislab verified that the personal office of local BNP leader Asadul Habib Dulu came under attack on October 29, 2023 in Lalmonirhat. Several media outlets reported the incident at the time, and all cited the same details and photographs.
Eviction drive footage represented as attack on BNP office
In another video, it is asserted that the BNP's central office in Dhaka's Khilkhet area was vandalised by locals.
However, dismislab confirmed that the video is old. It was found on the Jago News YouTube channel, uploaded on June 26, 2025. As per the title and context of the video, it shows a joint operation by law enforcement agencies to evict several illegal establishments from the Khilkhet rail gate area.
The clip is not related to the BNP office attack, and is at least a fortnight old.
BNP office torched in Rupganj: A 9-month-old video
Another video has been circulating with the caption mentioning that the BNP office in Narayanganj's Rupganj was set on fire. A Facebook page named Muktibahini shared the video taken from an Ekattor TV report that was actually aired on October 8, 2024.
Scrap trader Sohag was beaten to death in broad daylight near Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka last Wednesday. Afterwards, the Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal and Swechchhasebak Dal permanently expelled four leaders for their involvement in the incident.
Following this, protests and rallies were organised across the country on Saturday. Meanwhile, several old videos have also been spread on social media, falsely claiming that NCP and Jamaat-Shibir activists had attacked the BNP offices after the public outcry.
