There will be differences in political ideology, but this was not a problem, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman said on Sunday.
Speaking at a programme titled "Role of poets and writers in the transition to democracy and what to do" organised by the BNP Media Cell at the National Press Club, he said, "You all may not have the same ideological position or political ideology as us. This is not a problem."
He said no one saw this as a problem. "We are all one in expressing unwavering faith in the sovereignty of the country."
Tarique also said the country should not become a sanctuary for extremism or fundamentalism.
"Only citizens have a true claim of ownership of the country. If we want to establish this truth, we must unite in favour of free and fair elections for the question of people's voting rights or freedom of speech to establish democracy."
He said freedom of expression was possible if an accountable state system could be established.
