Nepal's Minister for Communication and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung on Tuesday termed the July Mass Uprising in Bangladesh as a historic expression of the collective will of the people for democracy and hailed the role of youth in ushering momentum for political transformation.
He made the remarks while addressing a commemorative event organised by the Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu to mark the first anniversary of the July Mass Uprising, which was observed with solemnity and fervour on the embassy premises, according to a message received here today.
Describing the uprising as a "people-driven movement", Minister Gurung reaffirmed Nepal's support for Bangladesh's ongoing democratic transition and praised the deep-rooted bilateral relations between the two South Asian neighbours.
Highlighting long-standing cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, tourism, information and communication technology (ICT), and people-to-people contacts, he called for strengthening regional partnerships in a rapidly interconnected world.
SAARC Secretary General Md Golam Sarwar attended the event as a special guest and lauded the July Uprising as a landmark event in Bangladesh's history.
He paid tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the political and economic freedom of the people and underscored the broader significance of the movement for democratic governance in the region.
Bangladesh Ambassador to Nepal Md Shafiqur Rahman reflected on the courage and determination of the new generation, particularly Gen Z, in confronting oppression and ending authoritarian rule.
He commended the role of expatriate Bangladeshis during the July Uprising and called for all stakeholders to support the interim government's efforts to build a democratic, inclusive and prosperous Bangladesh.
The ceremony began with the national anthems of Bangladesh and Nepal, followed by a minute of silence in memory of the July martyrs. Messages from the President and Chief Adviser of Bangladesh were read out.
A short documentary titled 'July Anirban' was also screened, portraying the struggles and aspirations behind the mass movement.
The event drew participation from a cross-section of Nepalese civil society, former ambassadors to Bangladesh, entrepreneurs, academics, regional organisation officials, and members of the Bangladesh community in Nepal. Representatives from SAARC, ICIMOD, UNICEF, and other institutions also attended the event.
