Jahangirnagar University has taken disciplinary action against 189 leaders and activists of the banned organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for attacking students during the mass uprising in July last year.
The decision was made in a late-night Syndicate meeting held around 3:30am on Tuesday, JU Vice-Chancellor Kamrul Ahsan told reporters.
Of these students, 64 have been expelled for life, and certificates of 73 others have been cancelled.
"The decisions were made based on the final report of a special investigation committee," the VC said.
"The punishment was given to those involved in attacks on protesting students in three separate incidents: one in front of Rabindranath Tagore Hall on July 14 last year, another in front of the then Bangabandhu Hall on the evening of July 15, and one on the premises of the VC's residence later that night."
Prof Kamrul added that among 229 current and former students, who were allegedly involved in the attacks, a total of 189 were punished as per the JU disciplinary rules. Among them, 110 are current students and 79 are former students.
The JU syndicate decided to suspend another 37 students for two years, eight for one year, and one student for six months.
Additionally, among the former students, the certificates of 73 have been cancelled, and the certificates of six others have been suspended for two years.
Twenty current students and 20 former students have been cleared of charges.
"The miscreants, planners, and police officers who were present on campus during the attacks are not under the university disciplinary rules. The university has decided to send the investigation report to the International Crimes Tribunal," Kamrul said.
Meanwhile, Abdur Rob, treasurer and head ofthe special investigation committee, said 40 students had been cleared of the charges as no photos, videos, or evidence linking them to the attacks were found.
"We found no direct or indirect proof of their involvement," he said.
