The interim government should now think about its exit policy and how it will transfer power to the next government, Distinguished Fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Debapriya Bhattacharya on Wednesday.
Speaking at a seminar organised by Democracy Dias, Bhattacharya said, "It is time to think about an exit policy. The current government will leave — but will the next government fully validate the actions taken by its predecessor? These issues still remain unresolved."
He further emphasised, "It is now essential to clarify the process by which this government will depart."
He also said despite ongoing discussions on reforms with the National Consensus Commission, final agreement is yet to be reached.
Pointing out the differences in the format for next elections – NCP and Jamaat-e-Islami demanding proportional representation and the BNP urging for the existing system – he said, "It is now essential to clarify the process by which this government will depart."
On reforms he said, "Reform is a continuous process. The minimum reforms that must be done — those should be completed before the election."
At the seminar, Abdullah Al Mamun, Chairman of Democracy Dias, presented a research paper examining the tenure, successes, and failures of interim governments formed at different times in 26 countries.
