Any individual against whom formal charges have been framed for crimes against humanity will be ineligible to serve as a public representative or hold any government position, the Advisory Council of the interim government has decided.
Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief adviser, shared the information with journalists at a press conference organised at the Foreign Service Academy after an advisory committee meeting.
He stated accused individuals would no longer be able to become Members of Parliament, hold positions in local government, or be appointed to government posts.
Alam further informed that Section 23 has been added to the International Crimes Tribunal Act, 1973.
Under the new section, if a formal charge is submitted against someone under Section 9(1) of the law, that person will no longer be eligible to be elected or serve as a Member of Parliament.
"The accused person cannot be elected to or serve as a member, commissioner, chairman, mayor, or administrator of any local government council or institution. They will also not be eligible for government service or any other public office," Alam said.
