The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Sunday filed the formal charge in a crimes against humanity case over the killings of six unarmed individuals in the city's Chankharpul area on August 5, 2024, reports BSS.
This is the first formal charge filed at the ICT in connection with cases filed over violence during the July Mass Uprising.
Confirming the matter to reporters, Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam submitted the charge at the ICT Registrar's Office around noon.
The prosecution pressed charges against eight individuals, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman.
The other accused are then DMP Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former Additional Deputy Commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam, former Assistant Commissioner of DMP Ramna Zone Mohammad Imrul, former Police Inspector (Operation) Arshad Hossain, and constables Sujon, Imaz Hossain, and Nasirul Islam.
Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Zunayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Md Ismamul Haque, and Manik Miah were killed in the Chankharpul area on August 5, 2024.
The investigation agency of the tribunal submitted its 90-page probe report on April 20.
"The investigation agency completed the probe report in six months and 13 days. Testimonies from 79 witnesses were recorded, and 19 video footage, 11 newspaper reports, two audio files, 11 books or reports, and six death certificates were attached to the report," Tajul Islam said earlier.
On April 22, ICT-1 set Sunday as the deadline for the submission of the probe report, after the prosecution sought four more weeks to complete it.
