The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday released a draft list of 42,618 polling centres for the upcoming 13th parliamentary election, marking an increase of around 468 stations compared to the 2024 national election.
"A total of 42,618 polling stations were fixed, considering one station is for on average 300 voters," EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed told reporters at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital.
The upcoming general election is planned to be held in early February 2026.
According to the latest updated electoral rolls, the total number of registered voters in the country now stands at 12,61,61,201, comprising 6,39,28,809 male, 6,23,06,177 female, and 1,185 transgender voters.
As per the draft list, the upcoming election will include 2,44,046 polling booths across 42,618 polling stations.
The Election Commission Secretary said some 1,14,939 booths will be designated for male voters, based on a ratio of one booth per 600 voters. Meanwhile, 1,29,107 booths will be allocated for female voters, maintaining a ratio of one booth per 500 voters.
He said the Election Commission will receive claims and complaints over the draft list of polling stations till 25 September and resolve those by 12 October, and finalise the list on 20 October.
Meanwhile, regarding CCTV installation in the polling station, the EC on 08 September informed the Home Ministry that the commission has nothing to do with the installation of CCTV cameras and body-worn cameras at polling stations in the 13th national election.
A letter signed by EC Secretariat Deputy Secretary Rashedul Islam was sent to the Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs on 8 September in this regard.
Earlier, the home ministry had written to the EC seeking to know its responsibilities regarding the installation of CCTV cameras.
