At least 50 people have been injured in a clash, stemming from a dispute between local leaders of the Chhatra Dal and Jubo Dal, in Ajmiriganj upazila under Habiganj district.
The incident occurred around 7:30pm on Monday, and continued until midnight.
According to the police, the clash initiated from an altercation over the bail of an accused at the Ajmiriganj Chowki Court between former college Chhatra Dal leader Fakhrul Islam, son of Rashid Miah from Nagar village, and Jubo Dal leader Maruf Ahmed, son of Qutub Miah from Azimnagar village.
During the argument, tension escalated, and Fakhrul allegedly assaulted Maruf.
On this issue, a few of Maruf's supporters organised a protest march in the municipal area against Fakhrul on Monday evening at around 7:00pm.
This led to a chase and counter chase between these two groups, and the situation escalated as both sides engaged in a violent clash using local weapons, bricks, and stones.
The clash lasted more than four hours, and left at least 50 people from both sides injured. The injured were taken to Habiganj District Sadar Hospital and Ajmiriganj Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Municipal Chhatra Dal Joint Convener Maruf Ahmed said, "Fakhrul Islam attacked me at the court over a dispute related to securing bail for an accused. In the evening, I organised a procession in Ajmiriganj town against Fakhrul. During that time, Fakhrul and his supporters launched an attack on us, which ultimately triggered the clash."
Municipal Jubo Dal leader Fakhrul Islam said, "Local Chhatra league President Rikto Karim vandalised the BNP office during the anti-discrimination student movement, and he is currently in jail in connection with that case. Recently, the Municipal Chhatra Dal joint convener attempted to secure Rikto's bail in exchange for financial benefits.
"On Monday, Maruf took the plaintiff of that case, Ibzal Mia, to the court by force. I tried to stop him, and as a result, Maruf organised a procession against me. When we organised a counter procession, the situation escalated into a violent clash."
Police Additional Superintendent (Baniachong Circle) Prabhas Kumar Singh said that the clash broke out in the evening following an argument between the two groups over the bail of an accused.
"The situation is now under control, and appropriate action will be taken after the investigation."
Ajmiriganj Upazila BNP Senior Joint Convener said, "The clash erupted between supporters of Jubo Dal leader and Chhatra Dal. The party will discuss the matter with other leaders before taking any action."
