City dwellers suffered as the students of Titumir College on Monday blocked the road in front of their college in the capital's Mohakhali from 1:00pm to 2:00pm.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Traffic Gulshan division on their Facebook page said, "Students of Titumir College are protesting by blocking traffic on both sides of the road in front of the college. As a result, vehicles coming from Gulshan 1 towards Amtali–Jahangir Gate/Mohakhali and from the opposite direction are unable to move."
Al Amin Hossain, additional deputy commissioner of the Gulshan zone police, told Stream, "Titumir College students had blocked the road from 1:00PM to 2:00PM. This caused traffic congestion on all surrounding roads. When authorities requested the protesters to clear the road to ease public suffering, they complied, and then traffic returned to normal."
Meanwhile, due to the protest rally of private primary school teachers, severe traffic congestion also occurred on various roads in the Press Club, Matsya Bhaban, and Shahbagh areas of the capital, causing suffering for the commuters.
Private primary school teachers who were demanding the nationalisation of 5,000 schools held a protest in front of the Press Club from morning until 4:00PM. Around 4:00 PM, they began to march towards the Chief Adviser's office in the Jamuna. As the rally approached near to the High Court Mazaar from the Press Club, the police imposed restrictions. Ignoring the police barrier, when the protestors tried to continue the march, the police used water cannons and fired a sound grenade. At that time, the protesting teachers dispersed.
Khalid Mansur, officer-in-charge of Shahbagh Police Station, told Stream that the protesters were in front of the Press Club since morning and carried out their program there. Later in the afternoon, when they attempted to block the road and march towards Jamuna, they were stopped in front of the High Court, and the situation became normal by 5:30PM.
