Gas extraction has officially begun from an old well at the Rashidpur gas field in Bahubal, Habiganj, with 8 million cubic feet of gas projected to be added per day to the national grid from Monday.
Md Abdul Jalil Pramanik, managing director of Sylhet Gas Fields Limited, confirmed the news on Sunday night.
On 5 September, the state-run company Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) detected a natural gas flow while carrying out repair work on the gas field's Well 3.
Following this, Petrobangla estimated that the well could supply 8 million cubic feet of gas per day.
Authorities also project that the well could yield a total of 25.55 billion cubic feet of gas over the next ten years.
According to a source at Sylhet Gas Fields Limited, BAPEX has been successful in renovating the well after three months of effort.
The well has been inactive since last year.
The renovation cost around Tk 73 crore, while the estimated market value of the projected 25.55 billion cubic feet of gas is about Tk 4,700 crore.
Additionally, the extraction will also yield gas condensate as a byproduct.
Sylhet Gas Fields Limited has launched extensive development projects. Alongside Rashidpur-3, drilling projects for Wells 12 and 13 are currently ongoing. If completed successfully, these projects are expected to significantly boost domestic gas production.
The Rashidpur gas field contains a total of 11 wells, of which seven are currently operational.
In February last year, gas supply to the national grid was resumed from Wells 2 and 9.
Since 1994, Well 3 had been a regular source of gas, but it was shut down last year.
Gas field authorities consider the resumption of gas supply from this well as highly encouraging news.
"After the presence of gas was detected during tests, all necessary measures were taken. Official gas extraction began at night, and starting Monday morning, 8 million cubic feet of gas per day is being added to the national grid," said Md. Abdul Jalil Pramanik, managing director of Sylhet Gas Fields Limited.
