The body of celebrated folk singer Farida Parveen will be laid to rest in her hometown of Kushtia, where she will be buried next to her parents at the town's municipal graveyard.
Earlier, her husband, flautist Ustad Gazi Abdul Hakim, told reporters that her body would be kept at the Central Shaheed Minar for about an hour, beginning around 10:30am. This will provide a final opportunity for her fans, cultural activists, and people from all walks of life to pay tribute.
Before the public viewing, a first namaz-e-janaza was scheduled for 9:00am at the Tejgaon Tazkunipara Mosque.
Following the tribute at the Shaheed Minar, a second janaza was scheduled to be held at the Dhaka University Central Mosque at 11:30am.
Farida Parveen, who passed away Saturday night at the age of 71, was a towering figure in Bangladeshi music. Born in Natore in 1954, she began her professional career in 1968. Though she started with Nazrul Sangeet, she became best known as the "Lalon Kanya" for her soulful renditions of Lalon Shah's timeless songs, including "Khachan Bhitor Ochin Pakhi" and "Barir Kache Arshinagar." Her five-decade-long career played a pivotal role in popularising Lalon's melodies and philosophy among a new generation.
