A Dhaka court has sent 12 activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations to jail after they were arrested while preparing to hold an illegal flash rally in the capital's Darus Salam area.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order on Saturday as police produced them before the court and pleaded for their detention until the end of the investigation.
Those sent to jail are: Al Amin, 32, Akkas Mia, 52, Sohag Maji, 38, Nesor Mia, 48, Yusuf Ali, 48, Faruk Hossain, 47, Mokbul Mridha, 54, Manki Mia, 38, Md. Shahin, 50, Md. Naeem, 25, Emdadul Haque, 37, and Abdul Alim, 22.
On Thursday afternoon, police arrested them from the Technical intersection in Darus Salam. According to the case statement, around 2:45pm, a group of activists from the banned Awami League and its affiliated bodies had gathered to prepare for a sudden protest.
Following a tip-off, police rushed to the spot and, with the help of locals, detained 12 individuals. However, several others managed to flee after noticing the presence of law enforcers.
Later, a case was filed against them under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Darus Salam Police Station.
