Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus expressed profound grief over the passing of eminent intellectual, veteran politician, and progressive thinker Badruddin Umar.
In a condolence message on Sunday, the chief adviser described Badruddin as a "shining beacon" in the nation's struggle for intellectual freedom and social progress.
"His active role in the Language Movement, unwavering stance against colonial mindset, and lifelong commitment to socialist philosophy have enriched our intellectual history," said Yunus.
Highlighting Badruddin's pivotal role in political activism directed against authoritarianism in Bangladesh, Yunus noted, "He spoke of a mass uprising from the very beginning to change the fascist and authoritarian government and recognised the July movement as an unprecedented mass uprising in the subcontinent".
The Chief Adviser also remembered Badruddin as more than a theorist, saying, "He…was a fighter who remained vocal against injustice throughout his life.
Badruddin Umar was the president of the Jatiyo Mukti Council and was nominated by the government for the prestigious Independence Award in recognition of his contributions to the nation.
Calling his death an "irreparable loss", Yunus said Badruddin's writings and philosophical outlook will continue to inspire future generations.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to Badruddin's bereaved family, colleagues, and admirers.
Badruddin Umar passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 93 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital. He had been suffering from old-age complications for an extended period.
