Two people were killed and another critically injured in a road accident early Sunday on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Feni's Lalpol Hafezia area when a speeding bus rammed into a sand-laden truck.
One of the deceased has been identified as Robiul, 30, the supervisor of the bus, hailing from Pabna's Sathia upazila. The identity of the other deceased, the helper of the bus who died on the spot, is yet to be confirmed.
According to police and fire service officials, the accident took place around 6:30am in the Dhaka-bound lane of the highway. A Shyamoli Paribahan bus, reportedly moving at high speed, rammed into a truck that suddenly braked in front of it. The impact left the bus helper dead on the spot.
The supervisor and the bus driver were rushed to the 250-bed Feni General Hospital with critical injuries.
The supervisor died of his injuries shortly after admission, while the driver was later transferred to Dhaka for better treatment. The truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident.
Mohipal Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Harun Or Rashid said, "Upon receiving the information, police and fire service personnel reached the spot and sent the injured to the hospital. The bodies have been kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy."
He added that efforts were underway to trace and detain the truck driver. "The damaged vehicles were quickly removed from the highway to ensure smooth traffic flow. Legal action has been initiated in connection with the incident," the OC said.
