Writer, researcher, intellectual and politician Badruddin Umar passed away on Sunday morning. He was 93.
Badruddin, who had long been suffering from various old-age complications, was taken to Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in Dhaka in the morning when his condition deteriorated.
He died there at 10:05am, Foizul Hakim, general secretary of Jatiyo Mukti Council, told Stream.
Badruddin Umar was born on 31 December 1931 in Burdwan district of West Bengal. His father, renowned politician Abul Hashim, was the general secretary of the Muslim League in undivided Bengal.
In 1961, Badruddin returned to the country after earning a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford, and in 1963 he founded the Department of Sociology at Rajshahi University.
Protesting the authoritarian practices of governor Monem Khan, he resigned from teaching in 1968 and devoted himself to politics and writing.
His book Purbo Banglar Bhasha Andolon o Totkalin Rajniti (The Language Movement of East Bengal and Contemporary Politics) was the first research-based work on the Language Movement.
Badruddin was the president of the Bangladesh Krishak Federation and the central coordinator of the Democratic Revolutionary Alliance. He was also once a member of the central committee of the Communist Party of East Bengal. In 2003, he founded the Jatiyo Mukti Council and served as its president.
