The National Citizen Party (NCP) has strongly condemned the attack on the shrine of Nurul Haque, also known as Nurul Pagla, in Rajbari, where his body was exhumed and burned. The party has called for a judicial investigation into the "mob terrorism" and demanded that all those involved be identified and brought to justice immediately.
A press release signed by NCP Joint Secretary Saleh Uddin Sifat on Friday night expressed outrage over the incident.
"Through media reports, we have learned that some people, under the banner of the 'Imaan-Aqida Protection Committee,' gathered in Gopalganj, Rajbari, and later proceeded to vandalise the shrine and commit the heinous act of burning the body," reads the press release.
The release further mentions, "It is noteworthy that the local leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, along with local scholars, formed the Imaan-Aqida Protection Committee. This committee had announced a protest after claiming that Nurul Haque was buried in a black-painted tomb in a manner contradictory to Sharia law, accusing it of disrespecting the sanctity of the Holy Kaaba. Despite the risk of violence, the administration failed to address the matter even after three days. The failure of the administration and the irresponsibility of local political parties are deeply concerning."
NCP demanded justice for the incident, stating, "Such barbaric acts are not only criminal offences but also a violation of our religious and social values. National Citizen Party demands a judicial investigation into this mob terrorism and urges immediate action to identify and prosecute all individuals involved."
The release also referred to the incident as part of a broader pattern of creating instability, stating, "We are deeply concerned about the ongoing attempts to create unrest by certain groups. In recent days, we have witnessed incidents such as the vandalism of shrines, attacks on Chittagong University students by villagers, and today's procession by the Awami League, which we consider to be part of a continuous effort to instigate instability."
Warning against the rise of fascist forces, the NCP said, "We fear that such incidents are creating an opportunity for the resurgence of fascist ideologies and powers. The interim government must find and punish those who are directly or indirectly fueling these incidents. Through these disturbances, we fear that a new fascist narrative is being built in Bangladesh. We urge citizens to remain vigilant and cautious about these developments."
