Police have recovered the body of Maulana Mushtaq Ahmed Gazinagari (52), central executive member and Sunamganj district vice-president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Bangladesh, 57 hours after he reportedly went missing on Tuesday.
On Friday, around 8:30am, locals spotted a body floating in the old Surma river in the Sharifpur Itbatta area of Dirai Upazila of the district and informed the police station.
Later, the police went and recovered the body.
Shantiganj Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Sukanta Saha confirmed the news, saying, "I have spoken to the members of his [Mushtaq Ahmed] family. This is indeed the body of Maulana Mushtaq Ahmed."
Hammad Ahmad Gazinagari, the district Jamiat leader and potential candidate of Jamiat from Sunamganj-3 constituency, also confirmed the recovery.
Maulana Mushtaq had reportedly gone missing since Tuesday night (2 September).
His wife, Ruby Begum, filed a general diary (GD) with Shantiganj police station on Wednesday, the following day.
Maulana Mushtaq had been serving as the principal of Boromoha Darul Uloom Islamia Arabia Madrasa in Shantiganj Upazila.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Dirai Police Station, Abdur Razzak, said that after receiving information from locals, the police went to the spot and recovered the body.
It will be sent to the Sunamganj morgue for autopsy.
He further said details regarding the cause of death will be known after the autopsy.
