While some victims of enforced disappearances have been rescued and reunited with families, the interim government must also work to find the many still missing, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion of "International Day of Disappearances" on Saturday (30 August), he said many families of the victims of enforced disappearance are living in unbearable pain and mental trauma as they remain without any trace of their loved ones.
"Many families have been pushed to the brink of destruction. Even after years, it remains unknown what happened to them after being disappeared for a long time.
"In today's civilised world, countless people are still subjected to enforced disappearances under authoritarian regimes across the world, and Bangladesh is no exception. According to national and international human rights organisations, more than 700 people, including political leaders and activists of the opposition and people from different professions of society, have been victims of enforced disappearances during the Awami regime," he added.
He further mentioned that Sheikh Hasina had created an "Aynaghar" and committed the most terrible atrocities and torture in history.
Keeping someone in this state for years is not only unjust but also a gross violation of human rights and international law, he said.
The Jamaat secretary general said, "We hope that the current interim government would immediately trace the victims and return them to their families and bring those involved in such heinous crimes under the law to ensure exemplary punishment."
