The Jahangirnagar University administration has asked for the deployment of army personnel on campus and police teams at the entrances for three days centring the JUCSU and hall council elections on 11 September.
"The university administration on 13 August sent letters to the army chief and the IGP in this regard," AKM Rashidul Alam, proctor and member secretary of JUCSU Election Commission told Stream.
"The university administration has taken various steps to ensure security during the JUCSU elections. To strengthen the security perimeter, discussions have been held with different nearby institutions. We have also spoken with intelligence agencies and will sit with community representatives of nearby areas," he said.
According to the university administration, assistance from army and police has been sought to avoid untoward incidents.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (administration) Sohel Ahmed said, "JUCSU elections are being held after 33 years. We do not want unrest.
Our priority is to ensure the safety of the students and maintain campus security. Since the army now has magistracy power, letters have been sent to the army chief and the police chief."
Aspirants began collecting the nomination papers on 18 August. Submission of the papers ended Thursday afternoon.
Appeals regarding the validity of the nomination papers will be accepted on 26 August, and the appeal hearing will be held from 9:00am to 2:00pm on 27 August. The decision on those appeals will be announced later that day. The deadline for withdrawing nomination papers is 28 August. The final list of candidates will be published on 29 August at 4:00pm.
