Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus said on Tuesday that he will ask the chief election commissioner to hold the 13th parliamentary elections in February 2026 before the start of Ramadan.
He said this in a televised address to the nation, and sought for cooperation from all citizens to hold a free and fair election so that they can progress toward a new Bangladesh.
All relevant bodies will start working on the issue from Wednesday, he said.
"This election should be held in a festive environment," he said.
On women voters, he said to ensure they can also partake in the election smoothly.
"This government was assigned three fundamental responsibilities -- reform, justice and election. We have formed reform commissions in order to ensure transparency, accountability and rule of law. Work is being done on those reforms which can be achieved in a short time. For the long term reforms, the National Consensus Commission has conducted dialogue with 30 political parties for more than two months on 166 proposals."
He said consensus was reached on 19 fundamental reforms, though some parties had points of dissent.
On justice and election, he said, "Those who were involved in the heinous murders will be tried in this land. Now we are embarking on our most important responsibility, which is organising the national election."
