The Election Commission has finalised a draft, dropping one constituency in Bagerhat, adding a new one in Gazipur, and redrawing the boundaries of 39 constituencies.
The constituencies will be redrawn considering administrative structure, geographical integrity, and census data, Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarkar said at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.
"The process of delimiting parliamentary constituencies is nearly complete. A specialised technical committee, formed with the commission's experts, has submitted its recommendations for the redrawing of constituency boundaries. Out of the 300 parliamentary seats, the boundaries of 39 are being changed. One seat is being added in Gazipur, while one is being reduced in Bagerhat," he said.
The Election Commission will publish a gazette in this regard soon, he said. Objections to the draft will be accepted until August 10. After holding hearings for each constituency, the delimitation will be finalised, he added.
According to the Delimitation of Constituencies Act, administrative structure, geographical integrity, and census data should be given importance when redrawing boundaries of the constituencies, he said
There are some inconsistencies in the 2022 census, he said, adding, "We do have the updated voter numbers. Based on the voter list and figures, the committee has determined the average number of voters per constituency would be approximately 420,000."
Boundaries will be redrawn for Panchagarh-1 and 2, Rangpur-3, Sirajganj-1 and 2, Satkhira-3 and 4, Shariatpur-2 and 3, Dhaka-2, 3, 7, 10, 14, and 19, Gazipur-1, 2, 3, 5, and 6, Narayanganj-3, 4, and 5, Sylhet-1 and 3, Brahmanbaria-2 and 3, Comilla-1, 2, 10, and 11, Noakhali-1, 2, 4, and 5, Chattogram-7 and 8, and Bagerhat-2 and 3.
"We reviewed each constituency carefully," he said.
