Students and mass people across Bangladesh on July 5, 2024, took to the streets, blocked roads and formed a human chain to protest against the HC verdict upholding the 2018 government circular of cancelling the quota system, thereby restoring the 30% quota in government jobs for freedom fighters' children and grandchildren.
The same day, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) leaders ran online campaigns discussing the next course of action and strategies to increase student participation in the movement.
Students of Jahangirnagar University (JU), Chittagong University (CU), Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU), Patuakhali Science and Technology University (PSTU) and Barishal University (BU) blocked the major roads and formed human chain to show their support for the movement.
The movement was getting intense, but Sheikh Hasina offered little response to the domestic protest which triggered students and civil societies.
Meanwhile, teachers also extended their support to the student movement demanding reinstatement of the 2018 circular.
In a statement, they said, "We express deep concern over the High Court order that declared illegal a part of the 2018 government circular abolishing the quota system in public service. We also express our solidarity with the ongoing movement by students and job seekers protesting the reinstatement of the quota system."
Calling of the day's programme, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) leaders urged the college and university students to boycott classes and examinations from Sunday (July 7, 2024).
