At Jahangirnagar University, the recognised Shibir leaders have already graduated and are not allowed to run for JUCSU posts.
Besides, the pro-Jamaat student body is not directly participating in the elections to the Chhatra Sangsad at the dormitories.
However, Shibir activists have expressed their wish to run for posts in the dormitories as "general students".
JU Shibir President Mohibur Rahman Muhib and Dawah Secretary Mashiur Rahman, both students of Bangla 47th batch, completed their studies in March 2024. JU Shibir Secretary Mostafizur Rahman, a philosophy student of the same batch, has also graduated.
This makes them ineligible to participate in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU) elections.
The JU Shibir 21 August announced that it would participate in the JUCSU elections under the panel titled Shomonnito Shikkharthi Jote.
But not all the 25 individuals named in the panel are affiliated with the Shibir, says the organisation, adding that 15 of them are "general students" who are active in "social organisations".
Vice-president candidate Arifullah Adib, a Shibir member, is a student of pharmacy 47th batch while general secretary candidate Majharul Islam, office and publicity secretary of the Shibir, is an English 48th batch student.
'General students' at the dorms
The JUCSU and its hall union elections are scheduled to take place on 11 September. Shibir has not announced any candidates for the hall unions, but some of its activists are running as "general students".
JU Chhatra Shibir President Muhib says, "Those associated with us and want to contest in the hall election have been asked to participate as general students. We have not patronised them in any way. Therefore, our organisation is not supporting anyone who is not part of it. Also, we do not have any members in the women's wing of the halls."
Shibir has 17 members in its JU committee. Nine of them are running for JUCSU posts, two are running in dorm polls as "general students", three of them are ineligible, and three others are not participating the elections.
The two Shibir men contesting the dorm polls are Mohammed Rakib Hossain, the student rights secretary, and Ali Ahammad, the information technology secretary of JU Shibir.
Rakib will be contesting for the vice-president at Hall-10 while Ali Ahammad will be running for general secretary at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall.
