Mahin Sarkar, who was vying for the general secretary (GS) post in the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election, has announced the withdrawal of his candidacy and extended his support to Abu Bakr Mojumdar, the candidate of the Bangladesh Ganotantrik Chhatra Sangsad (BAGCHAS).
Making the announcement during a brief at the university's Madhur Canteen on Friday around 11:30am, he said, "Unity among all forces is essential at every level. I believe, if someone from the frontlines of the July mass uprising is elected to DUCSU, they will hold a greater sense of responsibility than others. Abu Bakr Mojumdar was a leading figure of the movement. His victory would be my victory. I am extending my full support to him."
Soon after Mahin had announced he was running for the GS post, the National Citizen Party (NCP) expelled him on charges of "serious disciplinary violation."
During the July mass uprising, Mahin served as the coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination.
Meanwhile, the newly-formed BAGCHAS, spearheaded by former leaders of the movement, is running in the DUCSU election under the panel name "Anti-Discrimination Student Council."
