Following the submission of a committee report, Dhaka University has decided to retain the cancellation of the candidacy of Ex-BCL leader Julius Caesar in the upcoming DUCSU polls.
Speaking to Stream, Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed the matter on Wednesday.
Caesar, a former leader of the now-banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) at Salimullah Muslim Hall of Dhaka University, was initially disqualified following the recommendations of a three-member investigation committee.
The committee was formed at the university's syndicate meeting on 27 August to investigate allegations against him.
Caesar's nomination prompted immediate backlash after photos of him submitting nomination papers for the position of VP made rounds on social media.
On 26 August, Caesar's name appeared on the final list of candidates published by the election commission for the DUCSU 2025 after the commission also recommended the cancellation of his nomination to the university authorities on 24 August.
In this regard, DUCSU Election Chief Returning Officer Mohammad Jasim Uddin told Stream, "Legal proceedings are underway against him (Julius Caesar). We cannot take any action against him until he is proven guilty. Therefore, we cannot remove him from the candidate's list. If he is proven guilty, he will be removed from the candidate's list."
Julius Caesar was elected as the general secretary at Salimullah Hall from the Chhatra League panel in the 2019 DUCSU hall union election.
He is accused of beating a student named Farid and kicking him out of the hall, although no case or legal action followed the allegation.
